Mekong Valley
Projects
While Mekong Valley Food typically supplies food to NGOs, we recognize that in regional emergencies, like the devastating floods in Laos (2024), the urgency of the situation calls for direct measures. In extreme cases, where regional communities face malnutrition or homelessness with no immediate access to resources, we accept donations to take direct action through on-the-ground partners. Our priority is to deliver life-saving aid until such time as NGOs can get involved to provide longer-term support.

In addition to the emergency cases above, we also accept donations to provide food to regional communities that face food insecurity but may not meet the criteria for support from NGOs. These are often one-time food deliveries to villages where there has been a crop failure or perhaps a broken contract for crop purchases. These donations are also used to help smaller NGOs that cannot meet MOQs for factory orders.

Project principles

Mekong Valley Food’s primary business is selling fortified blended foods to organisations serving communities facing food insecurity and its many associated challenges. So, when we step in directly, we are looking to help families and communities that meet specific criteria, which are listed for each project in the links below.

Mekong Valley Foods is not a charity. So when a donation is made for an emergency project, 100% of your donation goes to the intended recipients via food, building materials or medical supplies. We do not take a cut. There are no admin fees.

On-the-ground partners

We partner with on-the-ground (OTG) organizations because they bring essential local knowledge and logistical expertise to ensure aid reaches those in need quickly and effectively. These partners understand the specific challenges faced by the communities, allowing for better coordination and faster response times. By leveraging their networks and experience, we can be confident that the food purchased with your donations is delivered directly to the hardest-hit areas. This collaboration not only maximizes the impact of every donation but also builds trust and accountability, ensuring help is provided where it’s needed most.

Mekong Hope Surgical Fund

Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, China

Mekong Hope Surgical Fund (MHSF) is an unregistered fund that helps marginalised and impoverished children in the Mekong delta region receive nutritional, medical and surgical help.

An Australian couple started the fund in 2009 to support the medical work of Ms Jagelman, a primary health care professional working in the region for almost 30 years. In partnership with organisations such as China Red Cross, Thailand YMCA and Myanmar Women’s Federations, MHSF has helped hundreds of children access life changing surgeries.

Mekong Valley Foods typically provides translation and operational support to MHSF for Laotian children receiving surgeries in Thailand. We have also donated food to their patients in Laos.
